This seminar examines the history of modern and contemporary Chinese art and visual cultural production from the early twentieth century to the present. It traces the artistic responses to the pivotal cultural and political shifts in China from the fall of dynastic rule in 1911 to the period of High Socialism of the mid-1950s to the early-1980s, and the economic and social reforms since the 1980s.
